Follow these "Style Golden Ratios"

Updated: Apr 14

Styling is often thought as something that's hard to boil down to clear rules hence so many people feel like it's hard to get started.

However a lot of advice can be actually put down in clear, almost mathematical guidelines.

Here are some useful styling advice to make sure to get the most out of your wardrobe.

Note, that this advice (as pretty much any styling advise) is not a gospel and for you personally it might different, however these are some generic guidelines that I personally find useful.

  1. 70/30 Rule

70% of your wardrobe should be your foundational pieces, otherwise known as "basics". Note that it doesn't mean only neutral colors simple items, "basic" items are defined by its versatile and timeless cut and styles. Colors can be very different, it depends on your personal aesthetic.

30% of your wardrobe should be "accent" items, that are more unique and statement. These are the pieces that will bring more flavour and character to your looks.

The problem that i see often is that people either have a lot of "accent" items and not enough basics to tie them altogether OR they have only basic items with no clothes that will accentuate their unique style and personality.

2. 1 to 3 (or 1 to 5) Ratio

Each bottoms (pants, skirts, shorts) should match with at least 3 different top options. Better if it's 5 or even more. That includes different variation with second layers.

The reason for that is that we change our tops more frequently and people mostly focus on our portrait zone. If i were to wear the same top for 3 days straight, it is likely to be registered by others. However if I were to wear the same pair of jeans for the entire week, while swapping out the tops, probably noone would notice.

Whenever you are buying a new item, run through the clothes you have and make sure that you know what to match it with. Sticking to this ratio will ensure that you can get the most value out of your wardrobe and create a cohesive and matching collection.

3. Max 2 of the Same Rule.

We all have our favourite styles and pieces and that's great. But a very common issue I see is when people have too many duplicates of the same item, which essentially means that they have much fewer pieces and options. It is especially common for people who are in the beginning of their style journey and are not clear on how to venture out beyond their regular stuff.

You probably don't need the 5th floral midi dress or 4th pair of skinny jeans.

You like jeans? Great. But then start experimenting with styles and shapes, get yourself bootcut, mom jeans, get a different color or a more unique design.
