Guide to Wardrobe Decluttering

Updated: Apr 14

Are you tired of staring at a closet full of clothes and feeling like you have nothing to wear? Do you find yourself constantly buying new items, only to realize they don't fit your style or lifestyle? Then it's time for a wardrobe declutter! It is the first step towards creating a better and more suitable style.

We all heard about detox for your body, but what about our wardrobes? Wardrobe detox aka declutter is really important as it holds a few key benefits:

  • helping you to remember all items you own

  • making sure that you wear and utilise the clothes at their full potential.

  • critically evaluating your items. to ensure you only keep the most suitable, modern and inspiring clothes

  • helping you to bring needed changes, when your lifestyle/climate/body shape/style/preferences change.

Below I am sharing my own guide to wardrobe decluttering, especially if it's your first one in a while. If you detox your wardrobe regularly, perhaps you will be able to skip some of the steps. Surprisingly, you will open your wardrobe only at Step 4.

Step 1

Understand what drives your need to decluttering.

Step 2

Analyse your lifestyle.

To have a productive declutter, you need to make sure you are clear on your current needs.

Step 3

In case you don't have your style direction yet, take this decluttering to take a moment and formulate your vision.

Step 4

Finally we can get to actual decluttering!

Make sure not to overhwlem yourself, don't try to declutter your entire wardrobe across all seasons.

Doing it in smaller chunks will be much more productive.

Step 5

Get creative and make sure to follow up on the actionable items (bring it to the tailor, wash, mend, etc) as soon as you can.

We all have that one bag that sits in the corner for months (if not years) waiting to be fixed. Get it out of the way ASAP.
